I realize that bringing up this subject may offend some of my readers. However, I feel that the consequences of not doing so far exceed the alternative. I certainly do appreciate your feedback, negative or positive, as my intent is not to offend others, but rather to hopefully shed light on an issue that is plaguing the photography industry and crushing the creative spirit of the field.

When I made the decision in 1998, to take that intimidating leap from amateur photographer to “professional”, my biggest concern was…will others beyond my circle of close friends and family accept my non-traditional approach to portrait photography? The integral element of my vision from the start, was to offer folks an alternative to traditional posed images of the Masters. I wanted (and continue to strive for) capturing the spirit and the heart of the moment. This is my vision…this is my heart, this is why I shoot.

The biggest challenge for me within the photography field is continually providing my clients with images that defer from any of those of their friends and co-workers. For each session that I stand behind the camera, there have been hours and hours of planning, strategizing, and brainstorming beforehand. Visually capturing personality cannot be accomplished without the hard work that occurs before I even pick up the camera. Continually providing this level of photography becomes much more challenging when a photographer resides in a small, rural community. Discovering hidden locations, unique ideas and poses beyond those of any other area photographers. Striving for uniqueness becomes increasingly more important for me. Competition is essential, as it forces each of us to continue to think outside the box and in doing so expand our creativity. However, there is a difference between competition and imitation.

After receiving the call last night in regards to this image below, and after biting my tongue for 4 years, I can no longer sit idly by and allow this to continue without at least speaking out. The example below is just one of many that I could reveal. My image on the left was shot and posted in July 2010 http://candlphotography.blogspot.com/2010/07/sneak-peekjohn-nye.html . In the image on the right the photographer chose to shoot in the exact dugout, with exact hand, body and eye positioning as that of my subject on the left.

As much as I am humbled, honored and appreciative of the fellow photographers who enjoy my style of imagery, for those few who choose to blatantly mimic it both visually, verbally (even as far as copying my exact blog slang, and descriptions into their own Facebook business page), I have to say that this is not only completely unprofessional and an absolute disregard of the artistry of those in this field, it absolutely hinders “your” vision it and ultimately cheats you of the beauty and creativity that resides within that vision.

I don't know about you, but I recall back in '07 when my son was graduating high school, I had no clue when to send out his announcements; what the proper time frame was for sending thank-you notes, or even the in's and out's of invitations vs. announcements. --So, today as I was reviewing my son's college graduation announcements, I thought I'd do a little investigating on the subject. Thanks to Genevieve Van Wyden, over at "e-how", we can all rest easy knowing we are now schooled in all things --graduation. :)

High School Graduation Announcement Etiquette

The high school graduate needs to understand announcement etiquette.
High school graduation comes with its own set of rituals and etiquette. This includes the graduation announcements that each graduate sends to immediate family, other family members and friends of the family. In order to avoid violating points of etiquette, graduates and their parents need to know how to handle sending out announcements, whom to send them to, how to avoid the obligatory gift issue and how to address each announcement.

Significance
High school graduation is a significant milestone for the graduate.
The graduation of your high school senior is a major stepping stone in her life. She has just completed 13 years of school, from kindergarten up through the 12th grade, and she may have been accepted to at least one university or college.
You want to help her celebrate this event in her life by letting your close friends and immediate family members know that she is graduating from high school. If you choose to let a wider circle of friends know, add a line to the announcements that says, "No gifts, please." This way, the announcement doesn't precipitate the thought, "She just wants a gift.

Graduation announcements differ from graduation invitations only because the invitations directly request the attendance of invitees at the graduation ceremony, and the announcements give word that your son is receiving his high school diploma.
High schools have begun to limit the number of attendees at graduation ceremonies because of space limitations. Because of this, they issue a set number of admission tickets to each graduate to send to those they've invited to the ceremony. For this reason, it's best to find out ahead of time how many tickets the high school issues to each graduate and plan accordingly.

Function
The graduate should send announcements to family and friends.
Graduation announcements serve to announce the happy news for the graduate and her family. Order only enough to send to those in your circle of family and friends who already know your daughter is preparing to graduate.
You can invite those who received announcements to the party after the ceremony. Even though you didn't invite them to the graduation ceremony, invite them to your daughter's party.

Considerations
Seniors and their families are excited at the prospect of graduating.
When your son gets his commencement package, he needs to follow certain guidelines in addressing and sending out his announcements. He should receive a package of name cards with his name either printed or embossed on the front. He should include his name card with each announcement. He needs to include an admission ticket in those announcements to family members and friends who are being invited to the ceremony. The interior envelope, which holds the announcement, can be addressed to "Aunt Sue" or Grandpa."
He can include a senior photo and party invitation as well. He should take care to use formal address on the outer envelope--Mr. and Mrs. John Jones. He should spell out words like Drive and Street rather than using abbreviations. He needs to slide the inner--smaller--envelope into the mailing envelope with both flaps facing the same way.

Benefits
Everyone benefits from receiving your daughter's graduation announcement. Your friends and family get to share in your family's exciting news, your graduate is able to spread the news, and you get the pleasure of marking a happy family event. Family and friends feel included when your daughter sends her announcements out.

The time has arrived, and how quickly it does each year, to recognize each of our extraordinary Seniors. We know what a joyous, exhilarating, and emotional time this is for each of you, including Mom and Dad and other loved ones who have nurtured and watched you grow into the fine, young person that they see before them today. So, just as you've hopefully done this entire school year...and with just a moments remaining of this monumental journey... breathe in every experience,, smile when it's time to smile; laugh from your soul when it's time to laugh; and finally, allow the tears to flow freely at that definitive moment when your heart realizes what your mind has been preparing you for since August.-This chapter is coming to a close. That ole' adage you've heard so many times before will become abundantly clear, "this moment will be bitter-sweet". Travis, like most of the fella's that we photograph wasn't too keen on the Senior Portrait idea, but because he just loves his mama so much (lol), he decided to set aside that country pride of his and let us give it a whirl. Well, as you can see and from what I'm sure you teen gals can see, Travis is one handsome lookin' fella. Of course, Travis is way too busy to with hunting, fishing and other activites to fool with Facebook (hahaha), but I told him I had no doubt he'd be hearing from some admirers.
Best wishes to you, Travis, as you head off to school is the Fall. I have no doubt you will make one fine mechanic!! :o)

Okay folks, I know I had said back in January that we had some exciting things in the works for 2010, and today, we're unveiling one of those super cool ideas....

Over the past several years Lana & I have been approached numerous times & asked if we would be willing to provide private photography lessons, or if we would hold a photography class. This tells me that apparently Lana & I have convinced some of you that we have a clue about what we're doin', lol! So, in response to your requests, we have decided to pick up the chalk, put on our thinking caps and share with you guys some of the skills that we’ve picked up along the way....

But, before we can decide exactly what we're gonna teach in the workshop, we want to know exactly what you want to learn in the workshop. So, to help us figure out all these details, I have created a short, teeny-tiny questionnaire for you to fill out. Sharing your name & personal info is not required, and is optional just in case you want to be the first to know when the workshop becomes available. We are planning to keep it small, with no more than six attendees per workshop. This may change in the future, but for now...we like to start small. **Oh, and btw folks, the workshop is open to all ages 13 & up. However, to let you in on one more little detail, we also have plans in the works to hold a workshop geared just for teens. If you are interested in waiting until that workshop becomes available, we'd still really like to hear from you so we can get a better idea of where the most interest is at this time.

**Update: Let's hear your sweetest, most romantic, most endearing memory ever, not just a Valentine memory, but ever? Thanks to my gal pals who reminded me that most romantic, sweet, and endearing moments don't always occur on Valentines Day and they don't always involve a mate...sometimes the most precious gestures are from our children, friends, and even secret admirers. :o)

In honor of Valentines Day, I thought it would be kinda cool to hear your most endearing; sweetest; or most romantic memory, gift or gesture (this can refer to anyone; boyfriend, hubby, child, friend, etc..). Or you could even share what your ideal Valentines date, gift, etc... would consists of.

To kick it off, I'll share my most cherished, romantic memory. For those that know me well, you absolutely know what a hopeless romantic my hubby is. Ahahahaah...NOT, lol!!! My dear David, is possibly the least romantic fella on the planet, but ya just gotta love him. After nearly 21 years of marriage, I've come to the conclusion that romance is not his particular gifting, but he's just so darn good-lookin' that I've just gotta keep him, lol.

With that being said, and because the hub's is so romantically challenged, the following Valentines Day memory that I am about to share, will always be at the top of my most cherished list.

-Way back in the day...Valentines Day 1993 to be exact, David and I were on separate shifts (he was on 3rd, I was on 1st). Being the young, totally broke couple we were, we only had one vehicle between us. Now,normally this wasn't a problem; that is until David decided that he wanted to do something "special" for me for Valentines Day (or perhaps he saw a commercial which reminded him it was Valentines Day and he freaked out realizing he had nothing planned and knowing I would be home in just a few short hours, lol. I prefer to believe the first scenario..hehehe) So, I arrive home after slaving all day at the chocolate factory (aka..Hershey Chocolate..true story); I walk through the door and I am greeted by the most beautiful bouquet of flowers (sidenote: I am not a fan flowers; purchased flowers that is. They're gorgeous, but they die. (Sorry, Nikki; C & C Sensations, best florists around for those of you that love flowers!! lol) So, back to the story..what makes this memory so special to me, is that my romantically challenged, hubby chose to ride my girly 10-speed (huge deal, here!) the 3 miles to the florists, purchased the flowers, and carried them in one hand, all while navigating this bike back home. -To some this may seem cheesy and small, but to me, even to this day, it means the world.

So now when I look at those hideous slippers, I smile and remember the only romantic thing my hubby as ever done!!!!!

Because of the line of work I'm in, I'm constantly perusing the web in an attempt to keep myself up on all the latest, coolest gadgets and trends in the world of photography. And every once in a while, I come across something so incredibly cool, and so fantastical (yep, made up another word. hope to have my own dictionary out soon, hahaha) that it just has to be shared.

Ladies and gentleman, if you really want to wow the guests at your wedding reception. If you want to do something truly off-the-hook unique, then you gotta get'a booth! A photo-booth, that is! Seriously, have you guys seen these?? I'm not talking about those tacky ones found in the area malls, I'm talkin' about a full-fledged, state-of-the-art photo booth. I was so excited about this idea that I even did a little research for ya. **Disclaimer--I in no way, shape, or form know, or recommend any of the listed vendors. Driver Winters Wedding

Oh my, could I be anymore behind. I'm sure Cameron and Katherine have kept themselves occupied in beautiful St. Lucia, and aren't too concerned with seeing their blog post. For the rest of you however...I beg your forgiveness for my horrid procrastination.
This wedding was one to go down in the history books. Any element that could be present, was! Cameron is a hopeless romantic, and he along with his dear mom-in-law thought of everything, even dance lessons. Every dance was a work of art,and the duet Thriller dance between Cameron and his father-in-law, Mr./Reverend Winters, was the hit of the evening. Who would have thunk a pastor could have moves like that! Very impressive!
This wedding was personally very special to me. Katherine's mother, Mrs. Winters, was my now 20 year old son's fourth grade teacher; not just any teacher but most certainly one of, if not my favorite of all of his teachers. It was of no surprise to me that Katherine is as charming and lovely as she.
Wishing the both of them a long, beautiful & blessed life together. :o)

Mark & Ashley's Day!

Mark and Ashley's wedding was reminiscent of vintage Hollywood style weddings. From Ashley's, Hepburnesk gown, bow-tied pumps,and oh so regal headpiece to Mark's suave, ebony suit, complete with a debonair silk, plum tie; to the tapestry of Fall colors and accents that adorned the entire reception hall. Absolutely gorgeous! Even better....cozy, and welcoming.
I do believe that Ashley and Mark claim the prize for the longest courtship of any of our bride and grooms. EIGHT YEARS, yes, that's what I said...eight years! However, even with a this lengthy courtship, the two were as eager and ecstatic to be joined as any I've seen. Here's to a beautiful life you two!!

Wow, what a joy it was as we drove down I81 to see the clouds parting and creating an absolutely picturesque day for John & Allison. What an amazing couple, and by the end of the night Lana & I were hoping to become honorary members of their families. With marriage being such a treasure, and seemingly less prioritized these days, it is a true joy to see such shining examples of love and commitment from both sets of parents. What a gift this foundation is for this young couple, and what an example to inspire them in their own journey. It's obvious that the light in both John and Allison's eyes stems from their adorable, & spirited son, Tripp. One thing this little fella has no lack of, is love! I see a beautiful,& blessed future for this very deserving couple.

Could this really be our fifth year photographing this lovely family?? The Henderson's have been with us since the very beginning. It has been a amazing to not only watch this family grow and change, but to also see our photography evolve from year-to-year. To be quite honest, I think dad Ronnie, actually enjoys these sessions more than the rest of the family--why else would he choose to do them on his birthday?? lol -- Miss Jaelynn, one of our most darling subjects, is no longer interested in childish, trivial props, like bubbles and faux, glitter snow...oh no, this young lady made it very clear that her sights are on Hollywood. Little brother, Zachary "Boo-Boo", is completely content with a stick and some dirt, oh and of course, Mommy must be within a stones throw of him at all times. Then there's Tanya, the getter of all the kisses, slobber, and other fun gifts that can be passed along with loving on mommy. What I love most about Tanya is her ability to laugh at it ALL.

Pulling it off---As moms we know that pulling off a family portrait is nothing short of rocket science. Seriously, there should be an award of some type. This is the usual family portrait scenario; we spend countless minutes scouring the sears catalog, or weekly Walmart circular in hopes of picking out those perfectly coordinated outfits, (which of course, never has our size in anything that we ultimately choose. So we decide to wing it, anyways who's gonna notice if its three sizes to big). Next we strategically plan nap time so as to have our precious children perfectly awake and ready to be all smiles for the portraits (again, this never works. Even if the child has religiously taken a nap at 2pm everyday for his entire 3 yrs of life, on portraits day he decides this will be the day he will make it the entire day without a nap, a new personal record). Ahh, then comes the always joyful combing of the hair. If we have managed to get to this point without a major meltdown by at least one family member we feel as though we may just be able to pull it off. Of course, that's just about the time that we notice that our delightful, precious four year old must have fallen asleep with the gum she has swiped out of our purse while we were dressing her little brother, and now we're frantically screaming for our hubs (who by the way, is usually downstairs in the recliner catching the last quarter of the football game) to grab some peanut butter, and the scissors on his way up (which most times will be that one pair of left handed scissors, that wouldn't even cut butter that we've had in the junk drawer for the past five years and keep saying we're gonna throw away). Finally, we toss everyone in the car, head out the driveway, when we remember we forgot the checkbook which is still sitting on the highchair next to little Billy's strained peas. We finally get in the car, buckle the seatbelt and take a long, deep breath, then it never fails, somehow between getting in the car and arriving for the session we end up having at least one noticeable stain on our perfectly matched sweater, our hair ends up looking like we had just rolled out of bed and possibly combed it with a fork. But then........the photographer a few weeks later, sends us that secret password and we view those portraits of our beautiful family and we once again, silently say to ourselves, "You are ahhMAZING"!! Followed by, "I am NEVER doing this again!!" lololol!! :o)

Smith Shoemaker Wedding, Barren Ridge Vineyards

So, what do you do when it rains on your wedding day?? You make wine, or you at least drink it, and you drink it in one of the loveliest spots in the Shenandoah Valley; Barren Ridge Vineyards, rain or shine.
When we gals are tiny, we begin dreaming of our perfect wedding day, and as we grow and change, that dream of course morphs into something a bit more tangible. Well, Samantha is no different than the rest of us. She had dreamed of this day her entire life. And no where in that dream did it include rain...lots and lots of rain. So what do you do when your dreams are dampened by life's little obstacles? You don't give up on your dream, you just re-envision it.
And that is just what these two, gorgeous folks decided to do... Tim, is about as amazing of a young man as I have ever come across. His best man shared in his toast that Tim is the most positive person he has ever known. I can honestly only recall one time the entire evening when I didn't see a smile on Tim's face, and that was only when we had to force him to give us a serious face (you'll see below, lol). Samantha pulled herself up by the high heels and was determined to make this day as memorable as she had always hoped. She already knew she was marrying that man of her dreams, and that was the most important detail of the day. These two are perfectly paired, not just because of their undeniable stunning looks, but because their hearts are equally as grand.

Oh wow, what an incredible day this was!! There are those couples sometimes that touch our hearts in such a way that being a part of their day almost seems ordained. I personally am one that believes in these kinda things, but even if I were a sceptic I believe this couple would make me a believer. Justin and Kasey have such a purity, such an authentic love about them. Their love is not only undeniable, it's contagious. It is impossible to spend ten minutes around the two, without their joy and enthusiasm spilling over into your spirit. True love does exists; if you ever doubt it, just meet...Justin and Kasey! <3

Wow, we're still reeling from this accolade. Lana and I both received an email around the second week of August informing us that we had been voted as the "2009 Valley's Favorite Photographer". If you all could have been within a five mile radius of either of our homes, you would have heard a decibel of sound possibly never engineered before, lol.... Once we recovered from the shock of it all, we both decided to keep it on the down low until it appeared in the paper, which was yesterday. For the two of us to keep our big mouths shut about something this big is just simply a miracle in and of it self.
Well, now we can shout it from the roof tops! Yippie, YAY, Woohooo!! Again, just as with the 1,000th fan on Facebook, this honor is only ours because of you. Shannon & Samantha's BIG day!

Now I have to just say that I said a prayer for this bride first thing Saturday morning. It was a miserable, rainy, cloudy, dreary ole' day. Although it's been said that it's lucky to have rain on your wedding day, I have a sneakin' suspicion that someone just made this up one day to calm down a hysterical bride, lol! I just knew Miss Samantha would be stressing. From the moment we met with her it was plain to see that she is a stickler for details and organization. Well, all of the prayers that were sent up worked! It poured the entire day; nothing by gray skies, then as Lana and I pull into the church parking lot, literally...the clouds parted, I kid you not! The sun came out; the sky transformed from a dismal gray hue to a beautiful sea blue. It was awesome! Sam was as calm as cucumber when I arrived. She was the least stressed of all of us I believe. And of course Mr. Shannon didn't have a care in the world. He just knew that when the clock struck 5pm he would be waiting down front for his beautiful bride.
The reception was held at Sugar Loaf Farms in Staunton. Wow, if you haven't had the pleasure of visiting this incredible landscape, you are truly missing out.

In less than a month this very excited dad, mom & big brother, Jackson will be welcoming, baby boy Leveck #2. Every time I do one of these sessions I always find myself being just a tad envious, and wishing Demi Moore would have started this trend waaayyyy before she did then perhaps I would have been more inclined to have a posed for a maternity session.
I just think there are few things more beautiful than an expectant mommy---that is except a sleeping newborn...(ok, on three will share in a collective..awwww!)

Love this dude! Guys are sooo funny when they arrive at the studio. There is never the excitement that is always there with the gals. Guys just want to get in, and get out and hopefully cease the constant naggin' from us moms about these monumental photos. Let's face it moms....when it comes to the Senior portraits for our boys, it's really all for us. They could care less. But...our boys being the phenomenal boys that they are, always strive to make momma happy. Such was the case with Mr. Derek. However, I told him what I tell all the guys we shoot---I dare ya not to have fun. Let me just say, not even five minutes into the shoot, Derek was laughing hysterically ( I mean this guy was LAUGHING OUT LOUD, as were we all), and this would continue for the rest of the session.
**Side note: Watch out world, this kid is going places!!

Have you ever met someone that made such an impression on you that you just immediately wanted to make them your new BFF?? Well, I'm probably just a tad too old to be Miss Sam's bff, but I'd like to adopt her if I could. I think I'd really have to fight off Mama for this one, but Sam is just the greatest. She has the best of everything all wrapped up in this drop-dead gorgeous package. Sam can go from sliding into home plate, to a dainty young lady in a sundress; complete with a hair ribbon. Best of all, this gal has a smile that lights up the world and the sweetest spirit that shines equally as bright. Oh, and you may just notice she and I share a similar passion (wink, wink) :o).

Honestly, sometimes trying to pick these teaser shots is just plain torture!! How on earth do we keep getting blessed with the most AMAZING couples. Not just the couples mind you, but the families are just phenomenal. Neil and Sarah are every photographer's dream couple. Nothing was off limits and their complete goal for the day was to have fun, and it didn't matter what it took to make it happen. This wedding truly was a family affair. The elaborate reception was held at Sarah's parents home, which resembled a postcard straight out of Savannah. Unbelievable!! Well, that's enough chit-chat for now. As the newlyweds head off to beautiful, Maui tomorrow, I praying for safe travel, beautiful memories and NO HURRICANE!!! (Who'da thunk you'd be safer in the Carribean during hurricane season over Maui??)

Steve & Meghan

I had been so looking forward to Steve & Meghan's wedding. This would be my first opportunity to photograph a wedding on the grounds of Swannanoa. I had assisted Lana about 15 years ago in a small wedding there, but this would be the first time that I would hold the camera, and the first time I would actually have the opportunity to shoot inside the mansion.
Steve and Meghan are one of those couples that weren't going to allow little disruptions, like rain, thunder, wind etc... to put a damper (pun intended) on their big day. Thankfully, the downpour held off until just minutes following the garden ceremony. Unfortunately, for me however..this forced me to capture the portraits under the mansion's verandah. This was just a minor glitch, although I would have loved some garden shots, this marble columns and stately architecture allowed for some beautiful photos. As soon as the we wrapped up the portraits, the skies cleared and a beautiful, and rare double rainbow set the backdrop for Steve and Meghan's reception. Beautiful!

Yeah, so it's supposed to be C & L's "official" (written in the books, in the calendar kind of official) vacation week, but since I obviously have done everything but vacation this week I figured I'd squeeze this one session in. Last evenin' my lovely assistant Madi (which was kinda like having Lana there, cuz..they're both the same height, hehe)and I headed out to a top-secret location to shoot some head shots for the young; the gorgeous; the talented; the fearless...Miss Lindsey.

It quickly became apparent to me, that I am just plain old... and dare I say ---chicken?? This location was uber cool, and had lots of opportunity for unique shots, as well as a catalyst for some great ghost stories. Just ask the girls, I'm sure they both have added their little twists and zing to the actual escapade. (Police line-do not cross, lights mysteriously turning on, ravens in the field,etc...)

Wow, spooked myself there for a sec. Back to the main reason for this blog--Lindsey. I'm sure you will totally agree, this is a beautiful young lady, with the best smile. She was so easy to pose, and so natural, and fun! Great combination.

Thanks to all of our loyal followers, C & L Photography reached its 1000th Fan on Facebook tonight. Lana & I watched the numbers move up all evening, and then around 10pm tonight we tripped 1000; that was just the coolest!! We want to each and every one of you to know how blessed we feel to have your support, your business, and your friendship. Each of you is what continues to keep us on our toes, and on the cutting edge of the photography world. In a business where ordinary is just not acceptable, and competition is fierce, we will continue to strive to be extraordinary.

This was my first visit to Alwyngton Manor in Warrenton, but hopefully not my last. This private residence encapsulates every possible detail that a bride and groom could dream of. Everything from the beautiful veranda, and gardens to the sensational red velvet seating of the carriage. Kevin & Caitlin were just the cutest. However...I have to say as hard as it is for a bride and groom to be upstaged on their own wedding day, I do believe the real star of the day had to be--Reggie. I must admit it here and now...I am in love with Reggie. Who's Reggie you ask?? Well, Reggie is Kevin and Caitlin's 7 month old------bulldog! Once you see his face, it will be easy to see why everyone just loves Reggie.

Does it count if I just do a snippet of a blog?? My goal for each session is to have three photos posted from each sitting within 48hrs. of the shoot. Well, in my attempt to get ready for my 20th Anniversary getaway, I haven't had a chance to really sit down and scan through all the photos from little Nolan's first big photo shoot. However, I just had to post this one, and mainly because as I was loading them, this one stuck out heads and tails above the others. Have you ever seen such an adorable face?? I rarely have had the opportunity to catch a smile like this one, and it's just too darn cute to keep to myself. Enjoy!

These two young ladies reminded me of the carefree summer's of my youth where nothing was more important, or more cherished to me than spending time with my little sister. At seven, and nine years old, Alexis & Jada's innocence and joy still radiates from their faces. Perhaps, if we could all allow ourselves to transcend back in time to those moments of our lives, each moment present & future would be all that much sweeter.

Philip and Starla, along with little Ashton, became a formally united family yesterday, June 20, 2009. Starla was the epitome of beauty in her couture' gown, custom created specifically for her in Barcelona, Spain. And Philip, we cannot forget about Philip --who was quick to point out that his fancy digs shipped all the way from Verona....Verona, Virginia that is. Handsome, charming and witty; what else could a woman ask for in a groom?? Well, even though the two are well on their way to Maui by now, I musn't allow that to excuse me from my blogging trend. Wow, are you kidding me?? Were girls this gorgeous back in my day?? Couldn't be. I had the toughest time trying to decide which of these photos to post. We had originally said we would post one of each girl, but just couldn't narrow it down. I just want to say what a blast Lana and I had with these young ladies. They are not only gorgeous, they also have the manners to boot. Shout out to the parents--woot! woot! Thanks to all the ladies for making our very first "Savvy Girl" teen model photo shoot, such an awesome success. **P.S. We wanna say a big thanks to our friend Kim, for bringing her A Game (comedy) and keeping the girls entertained between their shoots. You rock!!

Come rain, snow, sleet or hail, nothing can keep us from shooting. I won't lie, we were a tad concerned as we rolled into Staunton with rain pouring down. But what does a pro do under pressure?? You get creative! But with these two lovebirds being as cute as they are, it wouldn't be possible to get a bad shot. Justin & Kasey were up for anything; which made this session so much fun. I am also completely loving my dumpster dive find of a suitcase. I honestly found this old thing sitting at the "dump" one day and had to have it. I've gotten more use outta this little treasure than most of the pricey props that sit dormant in the studio.

Lana and I took off last evening for a natural light, in-home session for the absolutely sweetest little fella. Honestly, I just wanted to put him and his little yorkie "brother" in my pocket and bring them home with me. We rarely have time to take on newborn portraits, but when we do, they are such a treat, and this little one did not disappoint. Mom and Dad are just the best to work with. Dad was a real sport, especially after being pee-d on no less that five times, and is definitely our first client to actually be poo-ed on.

I decided (in my attempt to keep up with my blogging) to share a sneak peek of a few of the images we captured. I don't know how Mom and Dad are gonna choose, as we have so many to choose from, and he's just simply precious in each of them.

You just never know what you may find on a family photo shoot. Thursday evening, Lana and I headed out to photograph one of our favorite families; the Wimer's, for their semi-annual photo shoot. Little Lexi always keeps us on our toes. I dedicated my entire workout last week just to this shoot; I had to be sure to be on my game. :)

Well, as per every shoot with the Wimer's, Lexi wanted to explore. Who could blame her anyways...there was a great big park to investigate and make her own. It quickly come to our attention that the only way we were going to earn Lexi's attention was to be sure and address her as, "Wolverine". Ask anyone that was in the park that day... this pint-size Wolverine could flash the sweetest smile, and proudly show off her signature wolverine claw. So don't be fooled by the adorable, neapolitan dress and dangly green ear bling, this little lady proves girls, as sweet as they are, can take a liking to snake and snails and puppy tails, lol.

The cost for a “Savvy Girl” session is $65, per model. Included in this investment is a three hour photo session on the downtown streets of Staunton. Lana and I can hardly believe we are about to celebrate our 5th year in this business partnership. I doubt either of us could have imagined what this partnership has blossomed into. Have you ever been curious as to how this partnership got its start?? We are asked this question at least once at every event. So I thought I would take a moment and share that with you all.

Lana & I met back in 1992. She & her hubby, Tim had sold us the land which became the place where our first home was built. Living side by side, Lana & I, along with our families quickly became the closest of friends. We were both new moms and were real lifesavers to one another during those insecure, early years of motherhood.

Our young boys were practically inseparable; such great memories of those times. I’m not sure the rest of the neighborhood was as fond of our mischievous fella’s as we were, lol. I distinctly recall Tyler & Douglas’s first motor vehicle collision which involved a battery powered “Bigfoot” truck (Douglas driving, and Tyler riding shotgun in the bed while being Dougie’s GPS device). Well, Tyler navigated Douglas and the molded plastic truck directly into our neighbors parked full-size Ford Bronco that sat innocently in the the driveway. The damage to the Bronco was quite severe; I'm pretty sure there was some touch up paint involved in the repair. I love that memory, although I seem to recall some stern punishment for the boys which was after Lana and I picked ourselves up off the floor from secretly laughing hysterically in the other room.
Well, after nearly five years with the best neighbors anyone could ask for, David and I decided to sell our place in Waynesboro and purchase my father’s place out in Lyndhurst/Sherando.
At the time of our move, Lana had already shot a few weddings on her own, a couple of which I had assisted. We both dabbled independently in photographing for different friends and events for several years after our move.
Then one day, out of the blue in early January 2004, Lana gives me a call as she is traveling home from Richmond, following a visit with her mother. She quickly subsided with the small talk and informed me that she really had something on her heart, something she felt that God was encouraging her to do. She went on to say that she felt that we should combine our talents in photography and create a business partnership. My first response was, “Are you nuts?!”. However, the more I listened to her share the vision for what God had shown her; I began to see it as a real possibility. We both decided to intensely pray about it, knowing full well that if this was a vision from God that we would both feel at peace with it and knew that God would bless that which he had commissioned. Our first session as C & L Photography took place in March 2004.
Ergo…here we sat 5 years later enjoying the immense blessing of this partnership. We, without a doubt completely know that this is what God had in mind for this business. We view C & L Photography as a ministry, not merely, just a business. Something very dear to us, and something the Lord laid on our hearts before our very first wedding in March 2004 was that we were to jointly cover each couple, pastor, family and our ability to document the event in prayer before each ceremony. I cannot even begin to describe to you what a blessing this one particular act has meant to us. We both also believe that this act of prayer was also the catalyst for our decision to become a part of, “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep”. We give God the glory for this partnership each and every day, and we realize that without Him, none of this would be possible. We have had the privilege of photographing numerous families, seniors, newborns, etc... And we have been blessed by each and every one of them. We have also had the honor of documenting close to one hundred wedding ceremonies and look forward to hundreds, if not thousands more.
Lana and I also would like to take a moment to remember a few, dear folks that we had the opportunity to photograph and also became very dear to us in these last 5 years. Sadly, each of their lives were cut short, and for reasons only our Lord knows, however…because our lives were touched because of meeting each of them, we want to honor them.

Brian Bistel, age 39 (passed Oct. 2006). Brian and his lovely wife, Theresa was the first wedding ceremony that C & L photographed.
Trisha Coyner, age 17 (passed Oct. 2006). Lana and I had taken Trisha’s senior portraits just months before she passed. Trisha and her family are also very dear family friends.
William Colmery, age 57 (passed Oct. 2007). Dear father of Anne Colmery; one of our brides).

Well, here we are five years later, completely transitioned from 35mm to digital; from the days of mailing in rolls of film to the lab, to the convenience of uploading the files; from Photoshop CS1, to Photoshop CS3 (now with CS4 waiting in the wings). However, with all the these phenomenal changes, a few things has remained the same…a great friendship, a mutual respect, the occasional humbling by the man UPSTAIRS, and a continued reminder that this opportunity to be in your lives is one of the greatest honor and blessing of ours.

Where did everything go?? I'm sitting here looking at my very blah living room, and feeling a bit melancholy. All the wrapping paper, ornaments and little twinkly lights has been packed away for another year. Honestly, the older I get, the faster time flies....

Well, this can only mean one thing...the future, right? So, as I begin 2009, I'm looking forward with great enthusiasm to all of the new and exciting opportunities that lie before me this year as an individual and as a partner in this awesome business. Lana & I met about a month ago for a "working lunch" and discussed our goals, & visions for C & L Photography for 2009. I'm really excited about it. I love to be challenged & pushed beyond even what I feel is achievable. So, with that said....look out 2009!

My most treasured Christmas heirloom...

In the hustle and bustle of pulling out all of those stored up Christmas decorations, I can hardly wait to get to my little red box. I always have a rush of emotion, and sheer joy as I pull out the gently wrapped items. No, I'm not referring to a box of priceless glass ornaments, or valuble tree topper...

Several years ago, about eight to be exact, I was thumbing through one of my magazines, and found an awesome idea for displaying past Christmas photos. We all have them, most of us have tossed them into a photo box, an album, and for those really organized folks...they have been scrapbooked. I am not one of those gifted with the scrapbooking talent, but I believe I have found the next best thing.

In the magazine, the designer had taken all of her family's past Christmas photos and strung them along her fireplace using a raffia type rope, and clothespins. I ran with the idea, and pulled out all of the our old photos. The next year, I decided to spice it up a little and actually mat the photos onto cardstock. I purchased a small grommet tool, some thick, black string and easily added the little touches that offer a more custom look to the photos. Last but not least, I bought a nice, gold gel pen and wrote the year onto the cardstock. My latest idea, and one I wished I would have done way back, is that each Christmas night the four of us meet in front of the tree, holding our favorite gift, and we snap our photo for that year. We usually look a mess; it's the end of the day, but it's so real. This is why I treasure it so much. Oh, one more thing..I always write on the back of the card any special moments, and gifts that are received.So every year when I pull out those cards for display, it's like traveling back in time for moment. This is my most treasured of Christmas traditions. My children love the idea, and plan to carry it on in their own families one day. And because I've had so many friends that loved the idea, I wanted to share it with others.

There are so many great ideas that can be derived from this one. For those of you who scrapbook, the ideas are endless. Don't have a fireplace?? No problem! String the photos around a doorway, a windowsill, wherever you can find a place. Hope it's as treasured to you as it continues to be for me. There appears to be royalty amongst us....

I want to take a moment and congratulate my buddy, Lana and her family, as they have been officially named, "the first family of Waynesboro". Lana's handsome, & distinguished husband, Tim was formally sworn in as the new Mayor of Waynesboro, Virginia, on July 1st 2008.

Now the reason for the delay in these congratulatory sentiments is due to the fact that my lovely, and talented, business partner oddly enough, could not locate a family photo for me to add to this post (which I have been persistently bugging her to do since July 2nd). So as you can see, the Williams family remains faceless at the moment. Nonetheless, I want to say how happy I am, for my dear friends receiving such an honor.

Tim, as humble as he is, was overheard recently being asked how he should be addressed now that he is mayor, "Mayor Williams?" , this person asked, and without missing a beat, Tim quickly responded, "Tim, just call me Tim."

Goodbye ole' Friend..

On July 29, 2008 I lost a very dear friend. After 12 loyal, beautiful years, I lost my Golden Retriever, Simba. Since the day he and I met, Simba was insistent upon being my shadow. I don’t believe I would have had it any other way. At home, where you found me, you found Simba (sleeping, eating, bathing, gardening, etc...), you name it; he was there by my side.

My shadow no longer lingers, yet so many memories do, and I’m just so grateful and blessed to have had the privilege of being the friend/owner of such a wonderful example of God’s love. Though my heart is broken, and I haven’t a day yet without tears, one thing I know without a shadow of a doubt… is the Lord allowed Simba into my life to reveal to me just how pure, and unconditional love truly can be. So for that, I will be eternally grateful.

Tribute to a Best Friend
Sunlight streams through window pane unto a spot on the floor.... Then I remember, It's where you used to lie, but now you are no more. Our feet walk down a hall of carpet, and muted echoes sound.... Then I remember, It's where your paws would joyously abound. A voice is heard along the road, and up beyond the hill, Then I remember it can't be yours.... Your golden voice is still.

But I'll take that vacant spot of floor and empty muted hall, and lay them with the absent voice, and unused dish along the wall. I'll wrap these treasured memorials in a blanket of my love, and keep them for my best friend until we meet above. ~Anonymous

Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep

It is still amazing to me that I have the privilege of waking up every morning with the opportunity to earn a living doing something that I enjoy so immensely. I find it incredible that I get to share in some of the most important moments of so many people’s lives. I’m there to see the tears shed, as a groom sees his beautiful bride for the first time. I see the pride on the faces of young men, and women as they take their first steps as Seniors. Then there’s the amazing beauty that flushes the face of an expecting mother, as well as the strong arms of a father as he gently cradles his newborn in his arms. There is rarely a wedding that you won’t find me wiping the tears away along with other family, and friends, as a father dances with his newly married daughter.

The moments that we share with our clients leave undeniable footprints on our lives. Each moment is as special and unique as each of our clients. This is the reason we feel so compelled to pray for each of our couples before each wedding. The work that we do is not just to take photographs, or sell prints….it’s to hopefully, touch the lives of our clients in some small, and memorable way.

Lana and I have certain causes that we feel very strongly about, both personally, and professionally. It is both of our desire to give back in an even greater way than we have been blessed. What worth is our gift if we only use it as a means of earning a living. One local cause that we strive to make ourselves available for is the local Pregnancy Help Center. We have had the pleasure of photographing several events for the Center, and we look forward to continuing to work with this incredible group of volunteers.

Recently, at a seminar in Richmond, Lana, and I came face to face with a foundation that we had already discussed on several occasions. This foundation, as well as one similar to it, and whether to be a part of it, had actually been a part of my prayers for well over two years now. Well, the answer to that question became abundantly clear back in May, as we sat watching a video of how the foundation got its start.

The “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” Foundation, is a non-profit organization that links families facing the most tragic moments in their lives, with a photographer that will compassionately, and respectfully, capture the precious moments before, and following the death of a child.

At a family's request, a NILMDTS Affiliated Photographer will come to your hospital or hospice location and conduct a sensitive and private portrait session. The portraits are then professionally retouched and presented to the families on an archival DVD or CD that can be used to print portraits of their cherished baby.

You can now see why the decision to be a part this network was such an agonizing one. I honestly don’t know how we will handle being in the presence of such sorrow, and grief. All that I do know is that this is absolutely a cause that I must be a part of. Just as every wedding, every Senior, and every family leaves and unmistakable footprint on our lives……..these children, these infants, will no doubt leave us forever changed.

Hear comes Peter Cottontail.....Could there be anything any cuter?? Oh my goodness...I could have just taken all them home with me. These little ones waited patiently, planning their egg finding strategies, as well as hoping to steal a few minutes with the superstar of the event, The Easter Bunny himself.

Waynesboro Dept. of Parks and Recreation held their annual Easter Egg Hunt at Ridgeview Park on Saturday. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. We've posted a few of the photos from the event. I have so many favorites that I had a difficult time choosing which to post.

One of the things Lana and I enjoy immensely, is the joy of photographing high school, Seniors. There is just something about capturing these young folks as they stand at the brink of adulthood. Most of us more uhhmm...seasoned folk, look back at those days with some regret as to the opportunites that we allowed to escape us. As one leaves the graduation stage there seems to be certain opportunites that are only available during that brief moment in time, and quite probably never come around again, so to that I say.... carpe' diem .

With that said, we had the privilege of photographing and absolutely beautiful, young lady this weekend. We were concerned the rain would cause us to postpone the session, but after a few minutes the clouds subsided and we were blessed with near perfect conditions.

Brittani is one of those subjects who truly smiles with her eyes. Those eyes...what I wouldn't give for those eyes...Brittani's eyes are just one element of this young beauty. She was an absolute joy to photograph, and we can hardly wait for her to see her photos. So to tease her just a bit, we're posting just a few from the session.

This is the time of year that Lana and I get to hibernate a bit. Besides meeting with potential clients, and booking sittings, this time of year offers a joyful lull. This lull allows us to assess our goals for the year, look into new product lines and techniques, and gives us the opportunity to take time-out for more of our children's activities.

Although, my son is off to college and my daughter's cheerleading activities are over until late spring, I love the chance to root for our local wrestling teams. Lana's son, Douglas, a sophomore at Waynesboro High school, is also the newest star wrestler for the Little Giants Wrestling team. Although this is his first year, his passion and excitement for the sport is apparent to all those who see one of his matches.

Lana and I just want to congratulate Douglas, as well as all of our local young men that achieved the honor of making Regionals this year. I can't wait to see the excitement on the mats this weekend. Go, Little Giants.... Go, Cougars!

Wow, what an exciting Super Bowl! I believe this may have been the very first time my hubby and I actually were rooting for the same team. You see...I'm a big Redskins fan and well, David...those Dallas Cowboys. Things get very interesting around our place during football season. My family has informed me that I need to wean myself away from the games, as apparently I get a bit out of control. I do take the advice, and only watch limited games during the season.

But last night...oh, all bets were off. For once, I actually enjoyed the game more than I enjoyed the commercials, although, I do have a few favs on that note. We had a few friends over and of course broke all the rules for eating healthy. I guess that means a few more minutes on the elliptical today, but it was worth it.

Well, everyone loves a Cinderella story, and now it's a Manning story. Nothing like an underdog beating the odds. So for today this Redskin fan, says, "way to go, Giants"!

My goodness, Valentine's Day is just 2 weeks away. I'm still reeling from Christmas and New Year's. It seems like Valentine's Day a lot around here. In this line of work, Lana and I have the pleasure of meeting so many lovely couples.

Just last week we met Sally & Joel. What a cutie couple. Sally is a teacher at local elementary school, Joel...well, Joel is an airplane mechanic. That's a first for us. It's wonderful knowing that if our company jet has any issues that we know exactly where to turn, lol.

Just before meeting Sally & Joel, we met with Nick and Anna, and....their adorable dachshund, Hans. Now, Nick is pursuing a career in Dentistry and the lovely Anna, has privilege of teaching science to the most enjoyable age group (:0); seventh, and eight grade middle school students. Anna looks young enough to be one of those students herself. Both Nick and Anna graduated from the University of Virginia and presently reside in Maryland. It was a joy meeting such an endearing young couple.

One thing Lana, and I always have to ask is, how did you propose?? Aren't we nosey? We've surely heard some beautiful stories, as well as some quite comical ones. Nonetheless, we love to hear them. And the rings....oh my goodness. We certainly have some grooms with impeccable taste. I'm an ole' sentimental fool. Perhaps, we should write a book on all the these romantic proposals? I suppose the New York Times Bestsellers List will have to wait awhile, but it's a thought.

Well gentleman, make sure you're already planning that, oh so romantic day, for the love of your life. Remember, the best things in life are free...

Wow, I can't believe I'm blogging. Who'd a thunk it?? Well, as you may have noticed, things are looking a little different around C & L's place. Lana and I are so excited about launching our new website. I suppose you could say that I'm the web geek of the two of us, and I've been dying to remodel our website for nearly 2 years now. After a little flattery, and a lot of begging (nothing is beneath me), Lana caved and gave the go ahead for the new site. Oh, I want to give a shout out to our buddy, T. J. for giving of his time and effort to get us going.

Hopefully, things are easy to navigate on the site. Call me materialistic,(seriously, I'm not..), but I wanted the bells and whistles for the new site. We would love to hear what you think. Is there something you would like to see, or even removed from the site. Have some suggestions, we'd love to hear em'!

As we start this new year, and with Lana and I about to begin our 4th year in business, (unbelievable) as C & L Photography; we want to say a great big thanks to all of our clients. We've had the pleasure of meeting some pretty amazing people over the past three years. We feel that many of you have become a part of our family, and we look forward to each session with you. We're excited about all the new faces we'll get to capture this year, as well as seeing our fabulous, returning clients. Lana and I truly feel blessed daily, to have this unique opportunity to share our love of photography with you. This isn't a job, it's a joy and we're looking forward to many more years with you!
